The creation of this character had been a personal project of mine over the last three years, and I have used him extensively in other works since then. This is the latest variation of his design, of which I have made over three different versions. The objective of the design had been to create a character with influences of Chinese fantasy and Buddhist thematics. With ClipStudio Paint, I had laid down the foundations of the character before implementing the precise details seen in the left reference.
An illustration I created for my Surface Drawing class in Art Foundations, inspired by a pen and ink illustrator, AckyBright. As their style emphasizes line and detail, it was an intentional choice to make as little negative space as I could while retaining fluidity in the piece.
The creation of this character began over five years ago. I had reimagined him again for a Communication Arts concept art class, and since then, have made many other projects following the direction of this design and its thematics. His colors and design take inspiration from lion dancing, an art that is both dear to me and my culture, with a mix of sci-fi fantasy as seen in his robotic companion.
This is a piece I created for a poster assignment in my Tabling and Merchandising class, which had the goal of creating a piece that could eventually be printed and sold. Inspired by the upcoming Lunar New Year, I chose to illustrate every animal from the Chinese zodiac surrounding my lion dancer character. With ClipStudio Paint, I began by creating the shapes and values of all the objects before going over with hard black lines. The coloring was achieved through using the color layer function along with rendering on top.
Callisto was another personal project of mine, where I wanted to experiment with creating a character design that revolves around the setting. In this case, Callisto lives on a desolate, desert planet, and I dressed him in a way that reflects both that and my biggest inspiration when making him, Trigun Stampede.
This is a piece I had created in ClipStudio Paint for an Illustration class. The objective was to use inspiration from an artist we admired, of which I chose AckyBright. As their style focuses on line and dark shadows, I decided to create metaphorical mechanical wings-- representing freedom-- for Callisto, using that as the main focus to push the clean yet busy look that is associated with AckyBright’s work. To keep that emphasis, I also chose to keep it very simple when it comes to colors, with only three major colors coming through the piece.
An original character I created with cosmic horror as my main influence. I wanted to blend together both creature and human character design as an exercise, and I grew to love the process and the character that came out of it. This cosmic entity is able to see into the past, present, and future with its hundreds of eyes— the design of which took inspiration from many real-world animals.
This illustration was created for an assignment in my Visual Studies class, where the objective of the assignment was to use light as a main focus. With this character being an entity that transcends the size of even suns, I decided that they’d be an excellent subject for my piece— a glimpse of something beyond our comprehension.
I began by creating thumbnails for the piece in ClipStudio Paint, making sure to emphasize light, which I did by using only two tones. From there, it had been a process of painting over the thumbnail, and being conscious of how light reflects, bends, and casts shadows.
Dante’s concept was an exploration of human anatomy and festival thematics. I didn’t have much experience with designing characters or creatures down to a bone level, and as a result, I created a character that had their bones visible. To be consistent with the mesmerizing aspect of his condition, I decided that his character should also be flamboyant and show off these visible bones like they’re something to be prized.
This illustration of Dante was a personal project of mine, where I wanted to explore the vulnerability and majesty of the human body down to the bone. As a trans character, Dante’s acceptance of his body all the way to its most fundamental level is really something I wanted to visualize, which is why I wanted to emphasize his expression and strive for anatomical correctness.
This character concept was created for a series of assignments in my Concept Drawing class, where we had to make a character, costume, and prop design based on a setting of my professor's choosing. The setting he chose was the "Galactic Bazaar", a settlement made of markets and trade that rests on a moon in space. My character, the Moonchild, is a being that is originally from the moon on which the Galactic Bazaar now rests. Akin to a fae creature in fantasy, he's a small and mischievous entity with a companion that keeps him in check.
I created this piece in ClipStudio Paint, using grayscale per the assignment guidelines. I used tones and lines to convey depth as well as give emphasis to parts of the character.
